The Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) and the Alaska Air Command (AAC) were the main commands of the US Air Force. The Pacific Air Forces controlled units stationed in Hawaii, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines. The PACAF was responsible for an area of over 100 million square miles; its forces were primarily exposed to threats from the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China and North Korea. The Alaskan Air Command was responsible for providing air defence forces that were operationally deployed by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), as well as other tactical units stationed in the state of Alaska. Both commands received modernised equipment in the 1980s and were supported by aircraft deployed from the contiguous United States by units of Strategic Air Command, Tactical Air Command, Military Airlift Command, the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve. Take a look at the daily operations of PACAF and AAC in the 1980s.
