Under King Clovis I and his successors, the Frankish Empire had developed into the leading military power of Central Europe. Due to the Frankish right of succession, however, there were repeated divisions of the empire and reunions, which eventually led to the decline in power of the Merovingian dynasty. When, after the death of King Dagobert I, the empire was divided between his two underage sons, the increasing influence of the house emperors already began to emerge.
In this second volume, the shield and sword of the Franks as well as those of the Alamanni, Thuringians and Bavarians incorporated into the empire are described in detail. The graphic reconstructions show Merovingian foot and cavalry warriors from the period from the middle of the 6th to the middle of the 7th century and are based on the numerous preserved and in part also richly furnished weapon graves of this epoch.
