The Citadel of Mainz: bulwark of Germany, Baroque temporal city crown, finally natural and architectural monument. The mighty, star-shaped complex with its four bastions contains a wealth of findings from four centuries. Detailed historical photographs and archives make the building and construction of a fortification in the heart of Europe vividly comprehensible.
The Jakobsberg in the south of the old town has always been the key point of the city's fortifications. On the hill, which was already fortified in the Middle Ages, a first fortification, the Schweikhardts-Burg, was built in the early 17th century. From around 1655, the fortress was transformed into the citadel that still exists today and integrated into the new bastioned city fortifications. The history of the citadel's expansion and transformation impressively reflects the history of the city and the country: the collection contains testimonies from the Baroque Kurstaat, the Revolutionary Wars, the era of the German Confederation and the Prussian-German Empire to the air-raid shelters of the Second World War and the administrative buildings of the post-war period. A comprehensive overall restoration, taking into account both monument preservation and nature conservation, made possible a comprehensive architectural-historical investigation and contextualisation of the unique fortification. Thorough architectural-historical investigation of an important Baroque-period fortification. Model-like in its special consideration of nature conservation
