Maps characterise our idea of historical spaces. They legitimise claims to power and cultural dependencies. Modern research proves this: The subtle "power of cartographers" is particularly effective. The Danube region is impressive proof of this. Ever since Johann Strauss' waltz, we have associated the "beautiful, blue Danube" with a major European landscape whose metropolises of Vienna and Budapest formed the political and cultural centres of the Habsburg Empire. This was not always the case: it was only during the military conflicts with the Ottoman Empire in the 17th and 18th centuries that large parts of south-east Europe were conquered for the Emperor.
