Description
The first comprehensive history of a mythical corps of the French army. The first rifle battalion, created by imperial decree in July 1857, was Senegalese in name only. In fact, this military unit, created in the French colonial empire, included all the coloured African soldiers who fought for France. There are numerous studies on the role of the Tirailleurs Sénégalais in the two world wars, but few works that trace their entire history from the creation of the corps in the 19th century to its disbandment in 1960.
Anthony Guyon, who is interested in both the overall development of this colonial force and individual fates (the activist Lamine Senghor, the resistance fighter Addi Bâ or the free Frenchman Georges Koudoukou), presents here the first comprehensive synthesis on the subject. He addresses the glorious moments of this army corps - such as the defence of Reims in 1918, the battle of Bir Hakeim in 1942 or Operation Anvil in 1944 - but also the tragedies that lined their path (e.g. the horrific massacres perpetrated on them by the Wehrmacht during the French campaign). Far from the usual clichés that lead to humiliating iconography still being one of the first elements associated with the identity of Senegalese riflemen today, this comprehensive yet accessible work illustrates the complexity of their position between colonial societies and the authority of the motherland.
