Description
Oberschwaben von der Frühen Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart.
Napoleon's rule in Central Europe at the beginning of the 19th century fundamentally changed the map of the southwest: in 1802/3, the numerous monasteries were dissolved and the imperial towns lost their imperial immediacy as well as the noble houses lost their state rights in 1806.
This change in aristocratic life, which had a special character in Upper Swabia with its numerous castles, is now documented in an exhibition. Starting in the 18th century, continuing through the revolution of 1848/49 and the end of the monarchies in 1918 to the present day, the exhibition shows how the self-image of noble families has changed up to the present day.
The catalogue documents a large number of objects, including numerous loans from Upper Swabian noble families, and thus provides an insight into noble life from the 18th century to the present. In the extensive accompanying volume, renowned scholars examine the consequences of mediatisation and the changing self-image of noble families in an increasingly bourgeois world.
