Co-creator of his era, founder of the "levée en masse", brought out of the cloak of historical oblivion. Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot, born on Sunday 13 May 1753 in Nolay, Burgundy, died in exile on 2 August 1823 in Magdeburg. His mortal remains were transferred to the Pantheon on 2 August 1889, making him one of the French "immortals". His three main spheres of activity as a soldier, scientist and politician reveal numerous, sometimes divergent, but often simultaneous personality traits, which are analysed in this study. However, one thing runs through and unites them all: patriotism, a sense of responsibility, a sense of duty, humanity and resilience as fundamental and not just political values - then as now.
