1789-1819: There were no other three decades in the history of Prussia that were more eventful and momentous: military defeat, territorial losses and political humiliation - reorganisation and modernisation of state and society - military liberation, territorial growth and increased political significance. It is no coincidence that more historically significant personalities worked in Prussia during these decades than in any other period of equal length: statesmen, soldiers, poets and thinkers. The "Prussian Portraits" describe and interpret the nature, development and influence of sixteen such influential personalities. The portraits are primarily biographical in nature. Taken together and in context, however, the portraits of the personalities also provide a picture of the period between 1789 and 1819.
