Volume 10 of the series "Potsdamer Schriften zur Militärgeschichte". Military forms of organisation and warlike action have undergone remarkable processes of professionalisation and scientification since the 18th century. The size and complexity of the military instrument often reduced the supreme command, which had hitherto been an elementary component of the monarchical principle, to a symbolic act. Constitutions redefined the military role of the ruler. Staffs took the place of personal advisors. This volume examines the relationship between monarchs and the military in Germany between the 18th and 20th centuries. The contributions by Michael Epkenhans, Jürgen Luh, Marcus von Salisch, Dieter Storz and Heinz Stübig present the significance of military biography in the dynastic self-image of selected personalities.
