The painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau, known for his meticulously researched and extremely detailed historical paintings, uses his own paintings to present the reader with the history of Spain from the days of the Catholic Majesties Isabella of Castile and Fernando of Aragon through the era of Emperor Charles V and King Philip II, the age of discoveries and conquests in the New World as well as the slow decline of Spanish power in the course of the Thirty Years' War and afterwards. The central theme is the Spanish military: the battles of the famous Spanish tercios on the battlefields of Italy, Germany, France, Flanders and Tunisia, the conflict with England as well as the voyages of discovery and conquest of people like Hernan Cortez in the Americas.
The text is splendidly illustrated by a large selection of paintings by Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau.
