After the First World War and the armistice of June 1940, French society placed its hopes in a renewed youth, which would be able to promote the goal of peace from now on. The French state took up this perspective by encouraging the founding of numerous youth movements, setting up a General Secretariat for Youth and promoting the cult of sport and physical culture. In addition, all the collaborationist parties set up a youth section within their movements, often in the context of fierce competition, more rarely due to an ideological unity achieved mainly towards the end of the war. The incredible profusion of these movements, with the most diverse social and political bases, often based on the minimal doctrinal foundation of the National Revolution, led to an unparalleled uniformological eclecticism. Their leaders, who came from the professional army, the extreme left or the Maurassian tradition, often maintained a bandit spirit until the end of the war, which the German authorities did not want to reduce. The history of the movements during the four years of German occupation is traced in this richly illustrated album, with numerous unpublished documents.
