The Unité Rochambeau, sometimes called the Groupe Rochambeau, is different from other women's units because of its unusual history, where women, whether from the upper middle class or more humble backgrounds, were driven throughout their service by a burning desire to save their country, France. However, this passion was further strengthened by the presence of inspiring leaders with strong characters. First and foremost is the emblematic figure of General Leclerc, commander of the French 2nd Armoured Division, whose respect and devotion were and remain unbroken by all the soldiers in his division, as well as the Rochambelles. But also within the unit itself: Florence Conrad, a true icon, but also Suzanne Torrès, who took over the leadership of this group all the way to Indochina. The story of this small unit, which comprised only a handful of women compared to the French army and was catapulted into a male-dominated environment, marks the beginning of the feminisation of the army as we know it today. That is why it was important to pay tribute to these women and their personal and individual stories, which are part of history.
