Cologne, 1525. Young Leonhart dreamily watches the ships moving up the Rhine. But his father, Tielman Scherfgin, silk merchant and city councillor, has no use for dreams. It is the time of the Reformation. In the free imperial city of Cologne, the people revolt against the council and the church: They want justice on earth, not in heaven. Tielman, who sympathises with the rebels, is betrayed and forced to flee. Leonhart is sent to Venice. When he returns years later to reconcile with his father, he is too late. He follows the trail of the traitor of old and uncovers a dark secret.
