Description
If Andrea Doria was perhaps the most important admiral between the end of the 15th and the first half of the 16th century, Ambrogio Spinola deserves to be counted with equal fame among the most able generals of the 17th century. These two sons of Genoa, who came from families that had long rivalled each other, were able to inscribe themselves with great letters in the military history of the early modern period.
Born in 1569, Ambrogio Spinola is almost unique in the military history of the 17th century, although Italian and local historiography has paid him little attention in the last century. At a time when military careers began very early, Spinola was first given a command in 1603, when he was entrusted with the continuation of the siege of the troops of the Spanish Empire in the fortified Flemish port of Ostend - the first siege of the general who was to go down in history as the "Espugnatore di Piazze". The appendix to this documented and engrossing text includes an in-depth study of Spinola's military operations in Germany and one on the organisation of the Spanish tercios, as well as numerous illus. and colour plates.
