The author, himself a tank commander of many years in the Bundeswehr up to brigade level, has documented the operational principles of the German tank weapon in 12 chapters after evaluating all German tactical regulations since 1935, an extensive literature research and numerous conversations with war veterans. The chapter on modern times has been brought up to date by the author, and now also deals with the subject of asymmetric warfare and modern "hardkill" systems).
In doing so, he deals with the types of combat (attack, defence, stalling) and the other tasks in combat (including reconnaissance, security, marching) as well as decisive elements in combat such as logistics, interaction with other weapons, leadership and the like. Finally, the life of the crew in and with the tank is illuminated with insider knowledge. The modern era, i.e. the experiences in the Bundeswehr, also occupies a large space.
The more than 700 illustrations, mostly photos from private collections, are not only of interest to historians, but also clarify the written word.
The new edition has a much more detailed introduction with an account of the structure of the German tank force. The chapter on modern times has been brought up to date (including the asymmetric threat, hard-kill systems, etc.).
In addition, this new edition contains a much more extensive introduction, with more detailed coverage of the structure of the German armoured forces. The format has also been changed somewhat, now resembling the "Tigers in Combat" volumes.
2nd revised new edition 2020. More than 800 ill., large format. 532 pages.
