Description
The Allies used all means of espionage to try to locate the launching bases and access routes for the V1 and V2. Therefore, from 1943 onwards, the Wehrmacht set up a special force in northern France to eliminate these enemy spies. Who were the men of this top-secret counter-intelligence? What families did they come from and what professions did they have before the war? Were they "strict Nazis" or were they opposed to the Nazi dictatorship? Were they educated and what was their personal relationship to France and England? How did the Western Allies judge the German agents after the war? In order to provide reliable answers to these and other questions, the author spent eight years researching in Germany, France, Belgium, England and Austria for traces of the personnel responsible for the intelligence protection of the V-weapons.
He carefully analysed archival material, some of which has only recently been released, and spoke with descendants of Abwehr personnel. Many of his findings are unexpected and give pause for thought. The Fi 103 flying bomb designed by Gerhard Fieseler and the A4 rocket developed by Wernher von Braun, better known as the "retaliatory weapons" V1 and V2, were considered the most dangerous innovations in weapons technology in the final phase of World War II.
