Description
This publication does not describe the Battle of the Seelow Heights in detail, but the political framework conditions and the military preparation as well as some aspects of the conduct of the battles in the run-up to Berlin. It is based primarily on documents and evaluation reports from the 1st White Russian Front, which have received little attention in publications on the Battle of the Seelow Heights to date. The starting point is, on the one hand, the Allied efforts to achieve joint victory and, on the other hand, the effects of the political tensions between the Allies on the planning of the major offensive. Furthermore, some political and military peculiarities of the "final operation to end the war on German soil" are analysed, which had a direct influence on the fighting, such as the open flanks of the 1st White Russian Front and the imminent encounter with the Allies. The interaction of the fighting and securing troops during the frontal assault operation and the share of combat and rear security in the fulfilment of the operational tasks set are presented in detail.
