Description
On 10 June 1940, the Regia Marina Italiana entered the war with a large but not yet fully developed fleet. The available data showed that the national fleet potential was far inferior to that of the Franco-British coalition, as the Regia Marina only had two efficient and combat-capable ships of the six theoretically available battleships, the "Giulio Cesare" and the "Conte di Cavour", both refitted in 1937, to which were added two other refitted battleships of the same type, the "Andrea Doria" and the "Caio Duilio", all four of which were armed with ten 320 mm guns, a smaller calibre than those of the enemy fleet. The two other modern-design capital ships, the "Littorio" and her twin sister "Vittorio Veneto", weighing over 41000 tonnes and armed with nine 381 mm guns, were still undergoing training in May 1940 before being commissioned in the summer.
