When one speaks of Christian seafaring, one thinks of the trading power of Venice, the cogs of the Hanseatic League, the voyages of discovery of Spanish and Portuguese caravels, the fleets of France, the Netherlands and England. The fact that the popes were also to be found on the seas for almost 1000 years with their own ships in adventurous undertakings, on the other hand, is known to only a few. With "Under the Pope's Flag", Ulrich Nersinger presents the first modern history of the Papal Navy in German.
It arose out of the need to protect the population against the Saracen raids that plagued the coasts of Italy in the 9th century. It helped to protect the Mediterranean against the pirates of the Barbary states and played its part in the naval battle of Lepanto against the Ottomans. But Ulrich Nersinger also reports on the research voyage of a papal ship up the Nile, traces the fate of the papal flagship and explains the curiosity that the Vatican's current "home port" is in the middle of the country.
