The unification of Italy as a nation-state took place in the mid-19th century - as in Germany - in the wake of three wars. Unlike north of the Alps, however, the military did not prove to be a modern and efficient tool of politics. In the last of these wars, in 1866 against the Austrian Empire, the Italian army suffered heavy defeats despite clear superiority.

The naval battle off the Croatian Adriatic island of Lissa on 20 July 1866 in particular was perceived in Italy as a catastrophic humiliation. Arne Karsten examines the prehistory, course and consequences of the national trauma "Lissa", and in doing so shows in what way a sea battle that is largely forgotten today was part of the hidden background of the prehistory of the First World War.
