Description
Equipment states, camouflage schemes, analysis of photos with exact location and time information, cartographic representations of the ship's movements, comparison of pictures from then and now. Many previously unpublished photos. Historical maps of the harbour facilities and relocation maps. Volume 5 deals, among other things, with the transfer and stationing of the "Tirpitz" in the Kafjord as well as subsequent operations to Bear Island and Spitsbergen. Steadily growing threats from air forces forced the "Tirpitz" more and more on the defensive, and the end finally came inevitably off Tromsö.
The fifth and final part describes the transformation of the "Tirpitz" from a powerful offensive weapon to a steel colossus that became increasingly difficult to protect. A great quality and quantity of previously unpublished material illustrates the history up to her capsizing off Tromsø. After years of research and evaluation of historical documents, such as the war diaries, as well as finding the corresponding photographic motifs on site, it was possible to assign almost all the pictures exactly with regard to their location and the time at which they were taken. Thus, history can again be observed in chronological order, with the permanent transfer to northern Norway, to the berth in Kafjord. Furthermore, the last major operation in September 1943 against an allied weather station on Spitsbergen is documented, as well as the near destruction by British small submarines. The subsequent, ever-increasing air raids made the end inevitable and so the RAF still managed to bring down the largest German battleship. The content of the book has been supplemented with important detailed information, perspective drawings showing the respective equipment and camouflage of the ship as well as route sketches. Furthermore, the photographs of the present and the past are contrasted with regard to the theatres of war, which have hardly changed until today. Although it is a German ship, the "Tirpitz" and also its famous sister ship "Bismarck" still enjoy great attention worldwide. Therefore, texts and captions are accompanied by their respective English translations to make this historical period of the Kriegsmarine linguistically accessible to interested people all over the world.
