Spring 1915: World War I is raging throughout Europe and has also reached the Balkan states and the Mediterranean. At this time, the author of this novel takes command of the submarine S.M. U-5 of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, which lies at anchor in Sibenik, Croatia. The French are attacking Montenegro with all their might, and so it is up to Trapp and his comrades to fight off the enemy.
U-5 runs out, and soon finds itself in a deadly tussle with French armoured cruisers and Italian submarines. The book is a tense and harrowing novel that traces Trapp's time as a naval officer in the First World War, giving the reader a realistic picture of the battle for the Mediterranean - who better to write about submarine operations than someone who took part in them? Georg Ritter von Trapp later commanded the French booty boat "Curie" before he took over command of the submarine station in Kotor, Montenegro. He also deals with these experiences in his extensive novel. The submarine weapon was still in its infancy at the beginning of the 20th century, and the boats with which the war at sea was fought were correspondingly primitive. The submariners paid the price. Celebrated by the propaganda, many of them did not return from their dangerous voyages to the enemy.
