When the Soviet Union dissolved, the international community believed that Eastern Europe could develop into a stable, democratic and peaceful region. It soon became apparent that conflict-ridden developments and ethnic tensions would dominate this part of Europe for more than two decades. Old and new areas of conflict influence the security policy situation. In some countries in the region, conflicts are hampering national and social developments. In others, they have triggered fears about security and stability. Lasting peaceful solutions do not appear to be in sight. Members of the Association of German Armed Forces Reservists have analysed the various areas of conflict in Eastern Europe as part of a working group. All countries on both sides of NATO's new eastern border were analysed from a geographical, social, cultural, economic and security policy perspective.
Conflict potentials, threats and existing areas of conflict are comprehensively analysed and explained in perspective. The "Practical Handbook. Eastern Europe - Understanding Conflicts" is part of a series of books on security policy published by the Association of Reservists of the German Armed Forces. It is aimed at all citizens who are interested in developments in this region and the associated security policy issues.
