My name is Alex. My father is Jewish, my mother Englishan explosive combination during the Second World War. I was fourteen when we fled the Nazis across the Pyrenees, finding refuge first in Spain and then in Portugal. My life changed forever in Sainte-Engrâce, a remote village in the heart of the Soule region. I had two dreams: to become a soldier and an accomplished horseman. I served in the conflicts in Indochina and Algeria. As a member of the French intelligence service, my missions became the catalyst for many extraordinary experiences. Horses were the constant thread running through my life; they offered a healing balance and a source of personal and familial fulfillment. Rich in authentic adventures where drama and humor intertwine, this story allows us to share the perspective of a man grappling with the aftermath of the post-war eraa time that so clearly reveals the dark side of our own twenty-first century. The protagonist recounts his experiences with the horrors of colonialism, the totalitarian excesses of communism, and the roots of the inexorable radicalization of Islam. With occasional touches of humor, he also tells of his numerous near-death experiencesthe defining moments of an eventful life.
