Founded in 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) had the primary objective of containing Soviet expansionism and fostering European political integration. This political-military organization formed the core of the Western Bloc. Today, in light of heightened tensions with Russia, NATO comprises 32 countries across Europe and North America. Its central mission is collective defense. This means that an attack on one or more of its members is considered an attack on all members. Traditionally the largest in terms of personnel, land forces are indispensable to the credibility of the Alliance. The commitment of each member state to spend at least 2% of its GDP on defense has led to a significant strengthening of land-based military capabilities. These increasingly capable, modern, and interoperable assets enable each army to meet the requirements of collective defense. Through their constant presence and logistical reach, land forces serve as the final line of defense for securing territory. It is to these forces that one looks when seeking to demonstrate a resolve for collective defense. This richly illustrated, 140-page book offers an overview of the land forces of the individual Alliance partners. It provides a detailed account of their respective armed forces, the equipment currently in use, and key ongoing programs. Furthermore, it presents the reader with concise databoth economic and militaryregarding essential criteria, thereby facilitating a comparison among the member states. Authored by three French Reserve Colonels, this book serves as a reference guide, a practical tool, and a stimulus for reflection for anyone involved in or interested in defense and security issueswhether professionals, academics, researchers, journalists, or private citizens.
