In the 1940s and 1950s, the Irish Bureau of Military History collected the testimonies of men and women who had taken part in the War of Independence. Gathered here are 35 accounts from witnesses who participated in the conflict in West Cork. The men whose reports appear here were ordinary young menpredominantly the sons of farmers. They were robust young men, accustomed to outdoor life and intimately familiar with their local area. Following the 1918 general election, the majority of seats went to Sinn Féin, the recognized republican party. The elected representatives gathered at the Mansion House in Dublin and proclaimed the Irish Republic. The Irish Volunteersan organization originally founded to defend "Home Rule" (self-government), to which these young men belongedwere designated the national army, charged with defending the state against its enemies. Thus, they were trained and armed to wage a guerrilla war under extremely difficult conditions.
