At the age of 22, Lieutenant Gérald Pau was severely wounded in his right hand during the horrific Battle of Froeschwiller in 1870. Facing the prospect of amputation, he requested to undergo surgery without anesthesia so that the limited available supplies could be reserved for soldiers with more critical injuries.
