Telling the story of a large Alpine valley in the Middle Ages is a daring undertaking, one never before attempted: a region is a geographical, but not a political, entity. Torn between the history of its various communes and that of the Dauphiné region, the medieval past of the Grésivaudan Valley encompasses vastly different situations: the communes of the upper Grésivaudan suffered for two hundred years from their border location, while at the same time already prosperous towns like Montbonnot and Montfleury led perfectly normal lives. The villages in the Belledonne massif, on the other hand, belonged to the County of Geneva for much of the period under investigation! The author has chosen to tell the story through events in order to better understand the twists and turns that shaped the destiny of this valley.
