Description
The American Civil War was the only war on US soil and at the same time the drama of a very young nation whose heterogeneous identity was unleashed here in a more than brutal way. The conflict between white settler society in the North and the South, characterised by large-scale land ownership, African-American slaves and their descendants, threatened to tear the Union apart - and continues to shape the US political mentality to this day.
It is not for nothing that the dispute over the legality of the Confederate Southern flag is always a highly charged political issue. The dramatic events of this fierce war, which claimed endless casualties, are thematised. The role of the railways, the modern, deadly weapons, and the photographic documentation of the war make it the central tragically violent event in modern US history.
