With a maximum displacement of less than 400 t, coastal escort ships are among the smallest combat units a navy can have. The French Navy could not do without them, and from 1944 onwards it was happy to take into its ranks some 30 American-built Patrol Crafts (PCs) to help return French naval forces to the seas.
For its operations in Indochina, it requested and received a further 15 of these small ship units. When the Algerian War began, 14 French-designed and built coastal escort ships were acquired. Subsequently, no fewer than 57 coastal escort vessels of different origins but very similar types were built under the French flag. These numerous, quite reliable and very economical escorts with their many qualities shaped generations of seafarers. In addition to the careers of the 57 small coastal escort vessels, this beautifully designed book also describes in detail their origins, technical features, equipment, missions and life on board. Volume 38 of the series "Collection Navires & Histoire du Monde".
