The U.S. Navys Grumman F4F Wildcat entered service with the British Fleet Air Arm in the autumn of 1940 under the name "Martlet." The aircraft played a significant role in the transition of British carrier-based fighter forcespreviously reliant on obsolete two-seatersto more modern, high-performance machines. Thanks to its distinctive characteristics and design optimized for carrier operations, the Martlet remained in active service with combat units until the end of the war. This book chronicles its history with the Royal Navy, covering its deployment on aircraft carriers in the Indian Ocean, operations from land bases in the North African desert, service on escort carriers in the icy waters of the Arctic, and, of course, its role during the Allied landings. The author has long been fascinated by carrier-based aviation and seaplanes, particularly British aircraft. This passion led him to document his research findings in articles about carrier-based aircraft and seaplanes.
