One of the most complex chapters of the Second World War unfolded in Italyspecifically, along its eastern border. A drama played out here that was witnessed by many but documented by few: the German leaderships attempt to establish yet another region of the "Greater Reich" in these territories. The landscape was defined by clashes between various ethnic groups and partisan resistance; by the Yugoslav plan to annex Trieste, the Julian hinterland, and the area around Gorizia; and by the desperate resistance of collaborationist unitsalongside fleeing Chetniks, Ustae, and Domobrancias they made their way toward Austria. This work is the product of years of research conducted in Italy, Austria, Germany, Yugoslavia, and even overseas; it assembles the pieces of an incredibly complex mosaic to paint a comprehensive picture of events during the war and the immediate postwar period, with a particular focus on Germanys plans for its "New Order."
