Zuber applied as a volunteer for the "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler" in 1936 and joined the 2nd Platoon of the newly formed 14th Anti-Tank Company. In the summer of 1939, the author joined the SS Artillery Regiment of the SS Disposition Division. In 1941 Zuber became Stabsscharführer, i.e. Spies of the 5th Battery of the SS Artillery Regiment in the 2nd SS Division "Das Reich". He saw action in the last German offensive in Hungary in 1945, fell into US captivity on 8 May 1945 and was handed over to the Russians. After three long years, Zuber returned home in 1948, completely emaciated.
