This book arose from the author's desire and intention to trace the lives of his parents on the basis of their photo albums, records and documents, to answer the question of why. The question of guilt is not posed, but the question of how to deal with the experience, with one's own history after 1945, is, therefore, limited to a description and rudimentary interpretation of the world they depict. An evaluation of the photographs was avoided.

What the parents actually saw, heard, read and knew remains unanswered. The parents documented their lives from 1914/1916 onwards in hundreds of photographs. Father took his camera with him to war, mother took hers to Brussels from 1940 to 1944. They filled their albums with fragments, texts and drawings. You can often guess how they felt. The story begins with the birth of the parents in Eisenach and Frankfurt am Main and leads through their childhood and youth in Thuringia into the National Socialist era. It describes their world during the Second World War and in the immediate post-war period, ending with their move from Eisenach via Friedland to Detmold in 1946.
