The last major German offensive of the Second World War was directed against Budapest in the spring of 1945. The Hungarian capital, which was surrounded by the Red Army, was to be liberated. The extraordinary importance of this operation is evidenced by the presence of six of the total of seven Panzer Divisions of the Waffen-SS. In the formation of the 6th SS Panzer Army led by SS-Oberstgruppenführer Sepp Dietrich, the Soviet troops were to be repulsed, after which the German tank units were to be made available for the defence of Berlin.
