In official historiography, the Totenkopf Division embodies the essence of the Waffen-SS, both because of the death's head insignia used by the SS unit from its inception and because of the origins of its first recruits, who came directly from the guards of concentration camps. Although initially composed of men unaccustomed to front-line combat, its commander, Theodor Eicke, molded it into one of the most combat-ready units in the entire Waffen-SS and, thanks to the establishment of specialized tank units, developed it into a true Panzer division. As early as 1940, the Totenkopf Division received light tanks, followed later by assault guns, and finally, in the autumn of 1942, its first Panzer III and IV tanks, as well as Tiger tanks.
