The Gestapo occupied a central position in the Nazi power structure. Not only was it closely intertwined with society through denunciations and the use of informants, but the active cooperation of state and party institutions was also crucial to its "state police practice." This volume examines these topics in detail from a regional historical perspective and contributes to a social history of National Socialism. The contributions address the Nazi infiltration of local government in a stronghold of the Catholic Centre Party and the practice of "protective custody" in the early stages of Nazi rule, as well as the largely unexplored Nazi Lawyers' Association and the biography of one of the heads of the Trier State Police Office, who later became Minister-President of Saarland. Furthermore, the volume exposes a network of former Trier Gestapo officers within the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and scrutinizes the self-portrayal of a "Jewish affairs officer" during an investigation 25 years after the end of the war.
