The rapid advance of Soviet forces on the Leningrad front between December 1941 and January 1942 cut off numerous German units from their lines and led to the consequent creation of numerous islands of resistance, particularly in the Demyansk region. Here, the Soviets managed to close some army divisions and the SS units of the Totenkopf division in a gigantic pocket. The Soviet general offensive south of Lake Ilmen began during the night of January 7-8, 1942, in freezing temperatures, almost forty degrees below zero. Thanks to the resistance of the German elite unit, the fighting continued until the summer of 1942, with the surprising complete victory of the German units, a fact which allowed the Totenkopf soldiers to be evacuated from the sector only in the autumn of 1942 to be reorganized in France.
