The Second Battle of El Alamein forced the withdrawal of Italian and German divisions from Egyptian territory, but Axis forces were unwilling to abandon North Africa. Over the next few months, heavy fighting raged in Tunisian territory. Italian and German divisions fought simultaneously on two fronts: against the British 8th Army and against the Anglo-American forces that had landed in North Africa in November 1942.
The Allied forces, who had hoped to reach Tunisia easily, nevertheless faced stubborn resistance from the Italian-German troops, suffering some heavy losses and numerous casualties. Meanwhile, the remaining Axis forces retreating from Egypt were positioned on the Mareth Line in Tunisia to meet Montgomery's 8th Army.
The Italian-German divisions found themselves fighting on both the northern and southern Tunisian front, contesting every inch of ground against the enemy. Sisi Bou Zid, Kasserine, Sbeitla, Medenine, El Guettar, Ouadi Akarit, Enfidaville are some of the scenes of the main and epic battles fought on the front, during which the Axis units, and in particular the Italian ones, fought bravely until the end, when the fate of the campaign was already sealed.
The narration of the events is accompanied in this book by a selection of photographs from public and private archives, in order to document the campaign as much as possible from an iconographic point of view and thus transport the reader directly to the African battlefields.
