It is little known that French volunteer units were also among the Wehrmacht troops that fought on the Eastern Front in the first bitter winter at the end of 1941, and were also among the last to defend Berlin against the Red Army in April 1945. After the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, around 13,000 Frenchmen enlisted in the "Légion des volontaires français contre le bolchévisme" (LVF), which was reorganised as the Wehrmacht's Infantry Regiment 638 and sent to Russia.
