Collaboration between 1940 and 1944 is not an invention of the German victor; the latter occupies, administers, persecutes and plunders without caring about the consent of the vanquished. It is the vanquished who first use this word and give it meaning, in the hope which quickly proves to be an illusion of benefiting from it. Collaboration implies acceptance of defeat and the resulting armistice. As a fluid and evolving concept, it requires constant adaptation to circumstances, the demands of the occupiers, the needs of the French people and the course of the Second World War. It is characterised by an extraordinary diversity of attitudes and behaviours and takes very different forms and expressions depending on the individual, the environment, the region and the time. This dictionary lists terms, events, places, organisations, publications and actors of collaboration on French territory and also reports on the memory of this phenomenon (development of ideology, historiography, filmography, etc.). It opens up new perspectives by revealing the complex reality of collaboration in France between 1940 and 1944.
