Carl Alexander Krethlow's account opens up a view of the war in a region that is still the focus of world events today. The 1st World War in Iraq - a subject treated stepmotherly by German historians - was characterised by a variety of combat procedures. The protracted and extensive battles in the region around Baghdad, Basra and Mosul exemplify the characteristics of warfare in the Orient between 1914 and 1918.
The rapid British advance in 1916 represents the war of movement. In the siege of Kut el Amara, the Ottomans used classic siege tactics. South of the town, the battle was fought from trenches protected by barbed wire and machine gun nests - an approach that differed little from the battlefields at Verdun and the Somme. In addition, the British used systematic punitive expeditions against the Iraqi civilian population. Measures that essentially led to the Iraqi uprising against the British occupiers in 1920. A volume from the series "Battles - Stations of World History".
