The term Saracens (from Latin sar[r]acenus; probably via Arabic scharakyn or scharqiyun, 'oriental' in reference to the Semitic inhabitants of northwest Arabia, from Arabic schar[a]ki, 'eastern') originally referred to a tribe that settled in the northwest of the Arabian Peninsula. As a result of Islamic expansion, the term was used in Latin sources and in Christian Europe as a collective term for the Islamicized peoples who invaded the Mediterranean from around 700 AD, also under the impression of the piracy they carried out. These include, for example, the Abbasids, Fatimids and Zirids. - Wikipedia -
