Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg (* 2 October 1847 in Posen; 2 August 1934 at Gut Neudeck, East Prussia) was a German field marshal and politician. During the First World War, the Supreme Army Command he led exercised quasi-dictatorial governmental power from 1916 to 1918. Hindenburg was elected the second President of the Weimar Republic in 1925. In 1932 he was re-elected and remained Reich President until his death. On 30 January 1933, he appointed Adolf Hitler as Reich Chancellor.
