In the years leading up to the Second World War, the Royal Army expressed the need for mechanised artillery units capable of supporting infantry and armoured divisions. On the hull of the "M" medium tank, the self-propelled 75/18 was developed, which proved to be the Italian armoured vehicle most feared by the Allies during the war. In fact, thanks to the 75 mm howitzer installed in the casemate, it proved to be an effective anti-tank weapon, capable of destroying even the most powerful and heavily armoured British and American tanks. During the course of the war, however, the Royal Italian Army requested the development of a version with increased armour penetration. The 75/34 gun was therefore installed on the hull of the M42 self-propelled tank for anti-tank defence. The first vehicles were made available to the Italian troops in the spring of 1943. Thanks to its good performance in action, it was also used by German units after the armistice of September 1943.
