Dragon Models Limited (Dragon or DML) is headquartered in Hong Kong (Tsuen Wan) and is a manufacturer of plastic model kits, die-cast models and military action figures. The company was founded in 1987 and now operates several locations in China, for example, various product lines are produced in Shanghai. Dragon Models products are distributed internationally by Stevens International, Revell, Italeri, Hasegawa and GSI.
Dragon Models - History of the model kit manufacturer
Dragon Models was founded in 1987 at the same time as Universal Models Limited. While UML was a pure distribution company for model kits, Dragon Models was founded with the aim of developing and manufacturing its own model kits.
For the first 10 years of the company's history, the focus was on military models. With the introduction of the Dragon Wings 1/400 aircraft range, the company changed its product policy. Civilian models were now added to the range. Unfortunately, the die-cast model product line was discontinued in 2014.
In 1999, the company introduced its 1:6 scale New Generation Life Action Figure line. So far, over 600 different figures have been offered. The range was initially very successful, but was discontinued in 2012.
Dragon Models introduced the Warbirds product line in 2002. These are 1/72nd scale die-cast models of both historical and modern military aircraft. In 2003, Dragon began manufacturing 1/72nd scale die-cast tanks, which are marketed under the Dragon Armor label.
Dragon Models Product range modelling
The range of modelling kits from Dragon Models is particularly aimed at experienced and ambitious modellers. The kits usually consist of an above-average number of parts. However, with the Smart Kits product line, the company also offers simpler modelling kits for beginners.
Similar to Bronco Models, Academy or Hobby Boss, the manufacturer offers a wide range of historical and modern military models, figures and accessories.
Dragon Models Military Model Kits
Dragon's military models offer figures and vehicles as kits, particularly in 1/35 scale. The models offered are often 3-in-1 kits. The kits contain all the parts needed to build three different variants of the vehicle or model.
With the Pz.Beob.Wg.IV Ausf.J, you have the option of choosing between two versions.
Even in the smaller scales, such as 1/72, Dragon offers rare vehicles like the German E-100 and Maus, which never made it past the development stage. Despite the smaller scale, these kits from Dragon Models also include photo-etched parts and decals that are usually included in the 1/35 scale kits.
Dragon Models Model-building Smart Kits
Dragon's Smart Kits are easier to assemble model kits that still aim to offer the model-maker a high level of detail. The kits are usually cheaper than the classic Dragon kits because they contain fewer metal parts. The series is therefore a good choice for beginners.
Dragon Models Warbirds / Dragon Armor
Dragon Models offers detailed models of historical and modern aircraft and tanks in the Warbirds and Dragon Armor lines. Some of these are produced in small editions and unfortunately are quickly sold out.
