A few weeks after D-Day, an article appeared in a newspaper reporting that only watery cider and poisoned water was available to our lads at the front. Unfortunately, there were no replacement transport aircraft available to bring non-essential supplies to the forward landing sites. As a result, several squadrons previously operating from the airfields on the south coast are said to have taken part in the operation. After the initial use of long-range tanks, the next method used was flying beer in barrels. A modification was made to allow the keg to be carried on the Spitfires' bomb carriers. Pilots from RAF Squadron No. 131 (Poland) claimed to have invented the idea of the "beer bomb" by using barrels with self-made nose tips to make them more aerodynamic. The "beer bombs" were adopted during the war by the
Canadians and the USAF during the war.
Included in this special edition are highly detailed resin parts required to faithfully recreate the beer-carrying Spitfires "Flying Drays".
-2 x beer barrels, including lids and barrel ends - 2 x nose cones (available information suggests that these were probably made from the rear end of a P-51 drop tank) - 2 x bomb racks - 1 x slip tank.
Also included in this version is an external canopy masking kit for the clear parts and a special edition pint glass, dedicated to ML208, one of the well-known aircraft that took part in these missions.
