Ships have achieved fame in various ways throughout the long history of seafaring. For example, the 17th-century Swedish warship WASA became known throughout the world through an accident and its salvage many hundreds of years later. Completed in 1628, the WASA was intended to support the Swedish fleet as a new flagship in the fight against Poland. However, the WASA capsized after only about 20 minutes on her maiden voyage in the harbour of Stockholm. It was not until 1961 that the wreck was salvaged from the harbour basin and subsequently restored and conserved. Since 1990, Sweden's most famous ship has been on display in the specially built WASA Museum.
