The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber aircraft that was considered one of the finest Allied fighting machines during World War II. It was deployed in combat in both Europe and the Pacific. The twin-tail aircraft was fast, heavily armed and very versatile.

It was no match for the single-engine Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters, but for its size it was also very easy to fly and effective - at least with capable pilots. This was especially true in the Southwest Pacific, where the most successful American pilots, Major Richard I. Bong and Major Thomas B. McGuire.
