The Beech Aircraft Corporation was founded in 1932 by Olive Ann and Walter Beech in Wichita, Kansas. After the end of World War II, the company developed successful aircraft families such as the Bonanza and the King Air series, which ultimately evolved into the Model 1900 series. The 19-seat commuter aircraft quickly became a bestseller, partly due to its pressurized cabin and a higher ceiling that allowed passengers to walk upright a first for this aircraft class at the time. One of the largest operators was US Airways Express, the regional subsidiary of US Airways. After the first aircraft were delivered in 1991, up to 50 aircraft were operated at its peak by four independent airlines operating under the US Airways Express brand: Mesa Airlines based in Arizona, Air Midwest based in Kansas, CommutAir based in New York, and Colgan Air based in Virginia. N124CJ was initially operated as N83306 by CommutAir for US Air before being purchased and re-registered by Colgan Air in 2003.
